Points of Separation – Part 3 : The age of the prophet…

We have come to what is most likely the biggest event and what I would call a pivotal point in history. ONE TO WHICH I THINK YOU NEED TO GIVE YOUR FULL ATTENTION TO. I will at this stage ask you to read everything with a specific question in your mind. What does God really want? Keep that in the back of your head till the end of this series, after each post ask yourself that question.

Moses has answered God’s Call (with much protest I might add). He has led the people out of Egypt and is in the process of leading them to the promised land. It was through this journey that the people started looking to Moses for their answers to everyday matters, and we see Moses start to take strain. Jethro, Moses’ father in law sees the situation and in Exodus 18 vs 21-23 he advises Moses to put able men in charge of tens, fifties, hundreds and thousands, in order to spread the burden and load of the concerns of all the people.

Further along when they enter the wilderness of Sinai, Moses goes up to God and God lets Moses know what he should tell the people of Israel. ” You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. Now therefore, if you indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel” Exodus 19 vs 4-6. God then lets Moses know that He will come down on Mount Sinai and speak to the nation of Israel and gives Moses specific instructions to adhere to.

It happens, God in fire and smoke and thunder comes down onto the Mountain and Speaks…..

God proceeds to give Moses the 10 commandments…
“Now when all the people saw the thunder (it says this in scripture so I guess they could see thunder then ha ha ha) and the flashes of lightning and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking, the people were afraid and trembled, and they stood far off and said to Moses, You speak to us, and we will listen; but do not let God speak to us, lest we die.” Now Exodus does not elaborate further therefore I will now jump to Deuteronomy to the same event, but for more detail.

And the Lord responds to Moses, “I have heard the words of this people, which they have spoken to you. They are right in all that they have spoken. Oh that they had such a mind as this always, to fear me and to keep all my commandments, that it might go well with them and with their descendants forever! Go and say to them ‘Return to your tents.’ But you, stand by me, and I will tell you the whole commandment and the statutes and the rules that you shall teach them, that they may do them in the land that I am giving them to possess.” Deuteronomy 5 vs 28-31

Now I know I quoted a lot of scripture here and its from the ESV version, but I really wanted you to see for yourself that all this is in scripture and when I expand you will know that its from scripture that I am pulling this out from.

This is what one could call the inception of the age of the prophets, intermediaries, priests. Take a look earlier where God tells Moses that if the people obey His voice they will all be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. Not even 2 full paragraphs down the people decide not to hear His voice directly and ask Moses to speak on God’s behalf to them and they will obey Moses. So now people have second hand information from God. This is a first where someone speaks on behalf of God, hence “the age of the prophet.”

Before this day, God spoke directly to the person He wanted to connect with, here we see a departure (separation) that only starts moving further away from God, and I would go as far as to say we continue that today as well.

Next week we find out just how big a leap this was……
